A Matter of Balance is an award-winning program designed for older adults to manage falls and increase activity levels. Two trained coaches guide participants through learning and activities that emphasize strategies to reduce fear of falling and increase activity levels among older adults. Participants show improved balance, flexibility and strength while viewing falls as controllable.

Stepping On is designed specifically for people who are: 1) at risk of falling, 2) have a fear of falling, or 3) who have fallen one or more times. Participants meet for two hours a week for seven weeks. Classes are facilitated by trained Leaders and provide a safe and positive learning experience. Classes are highly participative; mutual support and success build participants' confidence in their ability to manage their health behaviors, reduce their risk of falls, and maintain active and fulfilling lives.

The workshop fee covers all sessions. Parking is free and water and snacks will be provided. This workshop is for anyone interested in meeting others who share an interest in improving strength and balance while discussing strategies on how to reduce the risks of falling. Guest experts are included as part of this workshop including physical therapy, vision expert, pharmacist, and a community safety expert. We hope to see you on May 8! Tai Ji Quan: Moving for Better Balance (TJQMBB) is an evidence-based fall prevention program designed for older adults developed by Fuzhong Li, Ph.D., Senior Scientist at the Oregon Research Institute. TJQMBB represents a substantive enhancement of traditional Tai Ji Quan as it transforms martial arts movements into a therapeutic regimen aimed at improving postural stability, awareness and mindful control of body positioning, functional walking, movement symmetry and coordination, range of motion around the ankle and hip joints and lower - extremity muscle strength.

This program includes 24 sessions. Please note we will NOT meet the following dates: June 25 June 27 July 2 July 4 Aug 1 Aug 6 Each session builds upon what is learned in the previous session. Please consider this class if you can make most or all of the sessions. It is ok to miss a session here or there, but if you anticipate being absent for a lot of the sessions, please talk to Bella or Shonette prior to registering. Thank you.

Participants must have completed the 1st 12 weeks of the Tai Ji Quan Moving for Better Balance class before the start of this session. Please wear comfortable clothing, shoes that are well-fitting and comfortable (not flip flops or heels). Bring a water bottle (optional). A chair without wheels is needed. Suggested class cost is $5/person per class. (24 classes per session.) Participants can pay what they are able. About the instructor: Jessica Karpinske is the owner of Rooted In Wellness LLC in the Duluth area. She works with individuals and small groups, providing health coaching and personal training sessions, private and group yoga classes with an overall focus on feeling good in your skin, improving health and wellness at the root level and tapping into a sense of self-love. Jessica loves working with clients to develop and maintain a healthy lifestyle that provides a foundation for a long life free of dis-ease. Jessica has been teaching this Tai Ji program since 2016. She maintains a consistent group of advanced Tai Ji participants and also enjoys leading new classes.
