Tai Ji Quan: Moving for Better Balance® (TJQMBB) is an evidence-based fall prevention program designed for older adults developed by Fuzhong Li, Ph.D., Senior Scientist at the Oregon Research Institute. TJQMBB represents a substantive enhancement of traditional Tai Ji Quan as it transforms martial arts movements into a therapeutic regimen aimed at improving postural stability, awareness and mindful control of body positioning, functional walking, movement symmetry and coordination, range of motion around the ankle and hip joints and lower - extremity muscle strength.

Registration is open to the general public (age 60+). Pre-register for the class by July 2, 2025. Zoom link and class materials will be sent prior to the class start date. *NO CLASS on Labor Day, September 1st.

Performing exercises that improve strength, balance and fitness is the single most important activity adults can do to stay active and reduce their chances of falling. The entire curriculum of activities in the Stay Active and Independent for Life (SAIL) program can help improve strength and balance, if done regularly.

TJQMBB represents a substantive enhancement of traditional Tai Ji Quan as it transforms martial arts movements into a therapeutic regimen aimed at improving postural stability, awareness and mindful control of body positioning, functional walking, movement symmetry and coordination, range of motion around the ankle and hip joints and lower - extremity muscle strength.

Participants must have completed the 1st 12 weeks of the Tai Ji Quan Moving for Better Balance class before the start of this session. Please wear comfortable clothing, shoes that are well-fitting and comfortable (not flip flops or heels). Bring a water bottle (optional). A chair without wheels is needed. Suggested class cost is $5/person per class. (24 classes per session.) Participants can pay what they are able. About the instructor: Jessica Karpinske is the owner of Rooted in Wellness LLC, serving the Duluth area. She works with individuals and small groups, offering health coaching, personal training, and both private and group yoga classes. Her approach emphasizes feeling at home in your body, supporting wellness at the root level, and cultivating lasting self-love. Jessica is passionate about helping clients create sustainable, healthy lifestyles that support longevity and reduce dis-ease. She has been teaching Tai Ji Quan since 2016 and enjoys guiding both long-time participants and those new to the practice. Her classes offer a welcoming space to build strength, balance, and inner calm.

Arthritis Foundation Exercise Program (AFEP) is a group exercise class for people with arthritis who want safe ways to stay active, reduce pain, and move more easily. Participants learn from a trained instructor on how to deal with challenges like pain that keep them from staying active. Participants will practice stretching, breathing, endurance, and balance activities tailored for their ability and skill level. AFEP can help control pain, boost energy and mood, and increase confidence about staying active and managing arthritis.

This class is only available for residents of Parkway Gardens. No classes on 08/07, 08/12, 08/28, 09/09 and 09/11.

Chronic Pain Self-Management is a group class designed to help participants live a healthy life with chronic pain by managing their symptoms. This program teaches new strategies that will give participants the confidence, motivation, and skills needed to manage living with chronic pain. Classes are highly participative, where mutual support and success build the participants' confidence in their ability to manage their health and maintain active and fulfilling lives.
